Espolón Tequila Review

Espolon Tequila ReviewEspolón Tequila tells BourbonBlog.com that they have returned to the United States after a brief absence with the same award-winning liquid but with a whole new look. We are reviewing this Tequila below, but first a bit on the new packaging of this cult-favorite tequila pays as it pays homage to the brave men and women who fiercely fought to establish what is known as today’s “Real Mexico.” Rich in iconic imagery, Espolón Tequila’s unique labels celebrate Mexico’s storied culture as well as the iconic rooster – a symbol of national pride.

The labels, illustrated by artist Steven Noble, are in a traditional 19th Century “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead)-style images, the labels illustrate the fictitious journey of characters Rosarita and Guadalupe, with their inspirational companion, Ramón the Rooster, depicting the struggles of the Mexican people during pivotal moments in history.

Espolon Tequila Blanco ReviewEspolón Tequila Blanco Review

Tequila: Espolón Tequila Blanco

Distillery: Destiladora San Nicolas, Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico

Proof: 80 Proof, 40% ABV

Color: Crystal clear tequila

Notes: Made from 100% pure Blue Agave—sourced from the Los Altos (highlands) region of Jalisco, Mexico

Nose: Agave, light almond, citrus

Taste: Enters with very soft-mouth feel some citrus and pineapple with a silky and approachable agave and hints of  black pepper mid-palate.

Finish: Clean finish of Vanilla bean with notes of white chocolate and marzipan

About the Espolón Tequila Blanco label art:

Espolón Tequila Blanco: The Espolón Tequila Blanco label tells the story of Guadalupe and Rosarita joining Father Miguel Hidalgo in his brave campaign for Mexican
independence from Spain. As depicted in this label’s scene, the duo fought fiercely with undying passion. As Ramón the Rooster crowed his shrill battle cry, the brave army of revolutionists clashed against tyranny, against the cruel caste system, willing to sacrifice everything for the cause. This movement set the stage for Mexico’s eventual independence.

Espolon Reposado Tequila ReviewEspolón Tequila Reposado Review

Tequila: Espolón Tequila Reposado

Distillery: Destiladora San Nicolas, Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico

Age: Aged six months in American Oak barrels

Proof: 80 Proof, 40% ABV

Color: Golden hue

Notes: Made from 100% pure Blue Agave—sourced from the Los Altos (highlands) region of Jalisco, Mexico

Nose: Banana, sweet and richer and juicier on Agave than in the Blanco

Taste: Sweet tropical fruit, hints of mint, a floral vanilla and caramel candy. Touch of oak with rounded mouthfeel and some herb-like flavors. Pepperiness that was present in Blanco seems overshadowed by sweetness, though there is a touch a pepper.

Finish: Vanilla and sweet, mildly spicy cinnamon

About the Espolón Tequila Reposado Label: Spain’s Hernando Cortés captured the Aztec capital of Tenochititlan, conquering its people and building Mexico City in its place. As illustrated in the Espolón Tequila Reposado label, Guadalupe and Rosarita reveled in the markets of this new metropolis, yet a pair of devilishly toothy grins hinted at their true intentions.

Driven by a passion for Aztec civilization—as their spirits had once played a role in this complex culture—the couple schemed to infuse elements of Aztec culture into every market in the country. Guided by Ramón the Rooster, they vowed that generations would benefit from this fallen society’s impressive achievements.

Lunazul Añejo Tequila

Lunazul Anejo TequilaHeaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. along with joint venture partner Tierra de Agaves, tells BourbonBlog.com that in April 2011 they will release of Lunazul Añejo 100% Agave Tequila. Bottled at 80 proof and available in a 750ml size, Lunazul Añejo will be aged for 18 months and will launch nationally in most markets at a suggested retail price of $21.99.

The release of Lunazul Añejo follows up on the extraordinary success of Lunazul Reposado and Blanco varieties that have been in the market since 2008. Since its release, Lunazul has the garnered “Rising Star” Growth Brand Award from the Beverage Information Group in both 2009 and 2010. Both varieties have also received broad critical acclaim and top awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the New York Spirits Awards.

While its pedigree and taste profile are top-tier, Lunazul revolutionized the Tequila category upon its launch in 2008 by offering high quality 100% agave Tequila at a price point just above the mixto category leader. Today, Lunazul has created a new sub-segment of high quality/high value 100% agave Tequilas. The Tequila category continues to grow and by adding Añejo to the existing Blanco and Reposado varieties, the truly full line allows Lunazul to play in the most connoisseur-driven segment of the 100% agave Tequila market.

Due to the vast agave holdings and efficient vertical integration of Tierra de Agaves, Lunazul’s pricing has been a game-changer in the 100% agave segment. The Añejo gives us a bottling at each different age, all supported by the eight-generation heritage of Tierra de Agaves Distillery,” Heaven Hill senior brand manager Reid Hafer tells BourbonBlog.com.

Lunazul is estate-grown, small-batch Tequila distilled and bottled at Tierra de Agaves’ state-of-the-art facilities in Jalisco, Mexico. The vertical integration of source materials, distillation and bottling ensures consistence of taste and quality, backed by the legacy of the Beckmann family. Tierra de Agaves is one of the few Tequila distilleries that actually own the land on which the agave is grown and harvested, carefully selected from the 4,000 acres of Weber Blue Agave plants that the Beckmann family and their past generations have controlled since 1758.
