All Good Things Must Come to an End, from Rooftop Pool at Hotel Monteleone

Hotel Monteleone Tales of the Cocktail

Rooftop Pool at Hotel Monteleone, no one wants Tales of the Cocktail to end on the last day

All Good Things Must Come to an End…So there I sat, worn from four amazing days of seminars, tastings and networking at Tales of the Cocktail.

The rooftop pool at Hotel Monteleone, the final stand – Brand Ambassadors, Bartenders, Writers, Mixologists, Chefs, Volunteers, Owners, Aficionados, Apprentices, Beverage Consultants and whoever else I have left out. Fancy titles truly lose their place here with everyone clad in swimming gear. At this place you held the distinction of ‘closing down the bar-’ through proper pacing or sheer determination you were able to bear witness to the last sunset of Tales of the Cocktail 2010.

Tequila and Fernet Branca were distributed via water pistols. People enjoyed fine cigars and Rums. Stella Artois out of a plastic cup? Only poolside, thank you.

This year some battled against the croup – a Southernism describing a bodily ill where one loses their voice and energy. I was one of these unfortunate souls and attribute it to alternating between the humid heat of NOLA in July and the dry cold of hotel rooms. I will admit, laid out at the watering hole, I felt like a Nile crocodile. Never mind me as I’m just drawing energy for the 10 hour trip home.

Some buffalo wings were graciously brought by one of the participants for the group (good play, man.) The human orange (literally- a man in an orange suit) cannonballed the crowd.

Mirth and mischief to the very end, how appropriate. More videos and stories will continue to be posted  here from Tales of the Cocktail on BourbonBlog.com, so please keep coming back. Bring a drink with you.

See you next year, Tales of the Cocktail! BourbonBlog.com thanks Ann Tuennerman, Founder and Executive Director of Tales of the Cocktail, Rebecca Schattman and all Tales organizers for their hospitality and all the brands and sponsors below. We wouldn’t want to leave any of them out.

Come Together, Right Now at Tales of the Cocktail, Day 4

Day 4 Come Together, Right Now

Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. Friends Parker Beam, Rob HutchinsNearing the end of our fantastic voyage, it seemed only appropriate that all of the disparate elements within the world of spirits (and those that love them) find a happy medium- a meeting ground for all that we enjoy.

Heaven Hill Distilleries invited us to their unique tasting room called, “The Art of American Whiskey.” Heaven Hill’s creative approach allowed tasters to explore the effects of different grains in Heaven Hill American whiskies with bread  pairings including Mellow Corn Whiskey (paired with cornbread), Bernheim Wheat Whiskey (paired with wheat bread), and Evan Williams Single Barrel Bourbon paired with multigrain bread). To compliment each of tastings, Heaven Hill had samplings both neat and with an array of cocktails created by Allen Katz, Gary Regan and other mixologists.

This was certainly a special opportunity to meet Heaven Hill Master Disitler Parker Beam and to explore flavors of grains. However, I must say that when given the chance to enjoy Heaven Hill whiskey, I almost forgot there was any bread in the room.

Next stop…we are headed to Beam Global’s soiree of their portfolio called the “Worldwide Cocktail Excursion.” It was a huge gathering guests enjoyed a tasting of their portfolio which was organized by country showcasing the spirit from that region. Kentucky occupying its own place in the queue. Each country was separated from its kin by large curtains and each tradition held its own sway upon the guests.

A tequila/jalapeño concoction for Mexico. Laphroig brought in a bagpiper. Jim Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe held court for the Bourbon tradition.

Every culture had something to add to the zeitgeist, a passion for the subject was the single common denominator. This is why we do what we do and the communal knowledge was served by the friends made this day.

Don’t think it is all business, when cocktaillians gather- we simply choose our time to cut loose with a bit more, discernment.

Spirited Award Ceremony Tales of the Cocktail 2010

A grand gathering of personalities in the cocktail and spirits industry sing and dance on stage during the close of the Spirited Award Ceremony Tales of the Cocktail 2010

From there we headed to the Spirited Award Ceremony at The Roosevelt Hotel. This was the grand event where Tales of the Cocktail awarded individuals and establishments that have shown outstanding talent for advancing the craft of the cocktail. More coming on this

The Bartender’s Breakfast sponsored by Plymouth Gin seems to become the event where everyone involved lets loose and simply enjoys themselves. I would like to think that the cab fleet of New Orleans was almost overwhelmed be the calls to this single address this
evening.

Thirsty Traveler Kevin Brauch, Floor Reporter of Food Network’s Iron Chef: America with BourbonBlog.com's Tom Fischer at Tales of the Cocktail 2010

Bourbonblog.com was pleased to find that we have a fan in Thirsty Traveler Kevin Brauch. Great company to keep, indeed.

Plymouth Gin and Tiki drinks ruled the night and the examples tasted were exceptional-bartenders mixing for other bartenders. Would it be anything but?

Some of the best graced these halls, on this evening: Tony Abu-Gamin and Eben Freeman, amongst others. Their austerity juxtaposed with the drinking and dancing of the  celebration you can only find at Tales of the Cocktail. All in all, one could walk away saying it was truly an event to be remembered
and that they will save up their lush-tokens for next year.

But then again, there is always the after-party…

Tales of the Cocktail, It’s Just Getting Good on Day 3

Firefly Sweet Tea Bourbon, Firefly Iced Tea Bar, Tales of the Cocktail, Hotel Monteleone Tales of the Cocktail, Day 3 Part 2 – It’s Just Getting Good

New Orleans in July, Southerners say “is as hot as the Devil’s Doors.” No better way to refresh oneself as the locals- with some Iced Tea or Southern Lemonade. Firefly Distillery of Wadmalaw Island South Carolina fortunately has infused both flavors into vodkas. We’ve always been a fan of their Tea Vodka line, and their Firefly Sweet Tea Bourbon. The Firefly Iced Tea Bar attracted neophytes as well as lovers of their product. This was one of Tales of the Cocktail’s excellent complimentary events at Hotel Monteleone making the chance to sample Taste of the Cocktail available to many. I was pleased to find that their Master Distiller, Jim Irvin, was from my neck of the woods- literally, my neighborhood. The flavors were there, with no off-putting nuances of additives. I was quite impressed, to say the least.

Firefly Vodka Founders Jim Irvin and Scott Newitt tell BourbonBlog.com's Tom Fischer that they ran out of Firefly Southern Lemonade and Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka in less than 20 minutes

Firefly Vodka Founders Jim Irvin and Scott Newitt tell BourbonBlog.com's Tom Fischer that they ran out of Firefly Southern Lemonade and Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka in less than 20 minutes

I knew I liked them folks when I laid eyes upon them. BourbonBlog.com will be bringing you our video coverage from the Firefly Iced Tea Bar soon!

One of the grand tastings and yet another complimentary event at Tales of the Cocktail was called “On the Rocks.” It filled Ballrooms C and D of Hotel Monteleone with a variety of different spirits producers. BourbonBlog.com was pleased to see a strong showing by the bourbon industry and whiskies in general including Four Roses Bourbon, Heaven Hill Distilleries, Sazerac and Buffalo Trace, and Bulleit Bourbon. Four Roses Master Distiller Jim Rutledge was applying temporary tattoos to the faithful. Josh Durr of Hawthorne Beverage placed his own flourish with Bulleit Bourbon Also of note was Coole Swan, the world’s first super-premium dairy cream liqueur by The Coole Quay Liqueur Company of Ireland. Be watching BourbonBlog.com for our interview with Coole Swan’s creator Adrian Walker  from On the Rocks.

That event was so voluminous; one had to pace themselves- else suffer the embarrassment of overindulgence. We are professionals, after all – even though I felt like a kid in a candy store.

Four Roses Small Batch Tales of the Cocktail We followed Four Roses Bourbon from the Hotel Montelone to The Mixoloseum where we joined Jim Rand the fine gentleman of 732 Social, Gabriel Szasko of CocktailNerd.com and Matt Robold of Rumdood.com Mixoloseum hosted a take-no-prisoners consortium of bartenders. Hundreds of spirits, mixers, fruits and supplies were available for mixing and everybody was encouraged to join in on the fun. The centerpiece of the evening was the 400 year-old glacier ice from Alaska being carved into spheres to serve with Four Roses Bourbon. About as good as it gets gentlemen, very well done!  WatchBourbonBlog.com for our forthcoming video episode from The Mixoloseum with Four Roses Bourbon.

On this particular evening, we all retired for the night simply struck be the sheer depth, diversity and passion of our industry. Every person has their own approach and every person is an integral part of the greater whole- a constantly evolving zeitgeist of people who absolutely love what they do.

To you I raise my glass!

Wheated Bourbon Aged 10 Years, New Parker’s Heritage Collection from Heaven Hill Distilleries

Wheated Bourbon Aged 10 Years, New Parker's Heritage Collection from Heaven Hill Distilleries Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. tells BourbonBlog.com that they will release  the fourth edition of Parker’s Heritage Collection as a cask-strength non-chill filtered 10-year-old wheated Bourbon in September 2010. This Bourbon uses soft winter wheat instead of rye as the “small grain” to produce a less spicy, rounder Bourbon. This limited annual series of rare, aged American Whiskeys that pays tribute to 6th Generation Master Distiller Parker Beam.

The cask strength, 131.2 proof wheated 10-year-old Bourbon promises to be worthy next entrant in highly decorated whiskey series. This new release marks the first in the Parker’s Heritage Collection to depart from the traditional Heaven Hill rye-based Bourbon mashbill. Instead of the more commonly used corn/malted barley/rye recipe, the newest edition uses corn, malted barley and Kentucky winter wheat. This recipe was first used at Heaven Hill in the spring of 1999, after the company acquired the wheated Old Fitzgerald line of Bourbons.

The new bottling of Parker’s Heritage Collection will mark the first release of Heaven Hill made, extra-aged wheated Bourbon. And it will delight whiskey connoisseurs because not only is it non-chill filtered, but it also is being released in two very small batch dumps at barrel proof. And like the previous three editions, it is being released in very limited quantities—only 52 barrels, kept in high storage in open rick warehouses, were dumped for this edition, yielding approximately 4,800 bottles for the United States and limited international distribution.

This new release is priced at $79.99,  considerably lower than previous releases, which carried an average national retail price of $150 for last year’s “Golden Anniversary” bottling and$200 for the 27-year-old Bourbon released two years ago. Whiskey aficionados will also appreciate that the natural esters and fatty acids, which are by-products of whiskey distillation and aging, are not stripped away from the Bourbon in a process known as chill filtering, but are left in the whiskey to provide a fuller taste profile and richer mouthfeel.

Packaged in the same upscale 750ml bottle as the previous three editions, the Parker’s Heritage Collection Wheated Bourbon is available in a three bottle case that should start hitting retail shelves during September, nationally recognized as the start of the Bourbon season.

“I am genuinely excited to introduce a nicely aged, cask-strength wheated Bourbon for this next version of my Parker’s Heritage Collection,” Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam tells BourbonBlog.com. “At this age and barrel-proof, is how a wheated Bourbon shows best…it has the caramel and smoke notes that only ten years in the top floors of our rickhouses can produce. And it has the long, smooth finish that I always look for in a Bourbon, with that softness that wheat brings to the recipe. I am very pleased that we now have wheated Bourbon that I feel has aged long enough to wear my name on the label.”

This new release follows last year’s “Golden Anniversary” Bourbon edition, which captured the “American Whiskey of the Year” award from Malt Advocate Magazine, in addition to being named “World’s Best New Release” in Whisky Magazine’s annual 2010 World Whiskey Awards. The 2009 release, a 27-year-old Bourbon, was the first American Whiskey to ever win “Best of Show, Brown Spirits” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Only Heaven Hill Distilleries, with the world’s second largest inventory of aging Bourbon and over 50% of the world’s supply of Bourbon barrels over 8 years old, could bring such rare and aged whiskeys to market. Parker Beam, along with his son Craig, oversees one of the world’s most highly esteemed distilling operations, where renowned brands such as Elijah Craig, Old Fitzgerald, and Evan Williams, the world’s second largest selling Bourbon, are produced according to Parker and Craig’s seven-generation-old family recipe and yeast strain.

Founded in 1934, Bardstown, KY-based Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. is the nation’s largest independent, family-owned and operated spirits producer and marketer and the world’s second-largest holder of Kentucky Bourbon. Heaven Hill’s diversified portfolio of brands includes The Christian Brothers Brandies; Evan Williams and Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys; Burnett’s Vodkas and Gin; Hpnotiq Liqueur; PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur; Lunazul and Two Fingers Tequilas, and Dubonnet Aperitif.
