Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear will be dipping live today, June 29 around 4 pm EST below. Maker’s 46 is the new Maker’s Mark Bourbon and  brainchild of Maker’s Mark Master Distiller Kevin Smith and Brad Boswell, President and CEO of Independent Stave. It’s a 94 proof product, created by the addition of toasted French oak staves to the finished Maker’s Mark product.

Hudson Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey Review

Tuthilltown Spirit's Hudson Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey Review Bourbon: Hudson Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey
Distillery: Tuthilltown Spirits, Gardiner, New York
Proof: 46% ABV;  92 proof
Age: Unlisted
Notes: Hudson Four Grain bourbon whiskey brings together the distinct characteristics of corn, rye, wheat and malted barley. Each batch starts with 800 pounds of grain which is ground at the distillery, cooked and fermented, then distilled twice. It is aged in Tuthilltown’s signature small barrels. Each bottle is hand numbered, this bottle is Year 10, Batch 3, Bottle 639.
Color: Medium amber
Nose:
Sweet corn and lightly spicey with a touch of raspberry.
Taste: Each of the four grains plays its own spectacular note and leaves a symphony of flavors. Smooth and sweet corn give a soft mouthfeel on the front end of the taste. A spicey note second and I can feel it on the front to mid tongue. The wheat and malted barley add some harmony and serve as strong background instruments to round out the flavor. Smooth mouthfeel. Some earthy berries and hints of berry as in the nose. As always, this Bourbon has a delicious signature Tuthilltown Spirits character which can only be described as, “That is Tuthilltown!”
Finish: Somewhat “juicy” in texture. Soft hints of marshmallow to lightly toasted marshmallows from a campfire.

Bowman Brothers Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review

Bowman Brothers Virginia Whiskey ReviewWhiskey: Bowman Brothers Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Distillery: A. Smith Bowman Distillery. It was originally located on the Sunset Hills Farm in Fairfax County, Virginia but was relocated in 1988 to Fredericksburg, Virginia in Spotsylvania County due to the rapid development of the Northern Virginia landscape.
Age: Unlisted.
Proof: 90 Proof (45% ABV)
Notes: This small batch Virginia whiskey has been distilled three times using corn, malted barley, and rye in a copper still. John, Abraham, Joseph, and Isaac, the four brothers, all served in the American Revolution. This whiskey is intended to honor those brothers for their service in freeing our nation from the clutch of England’s rule. For what it offers, this whiskey may be a little expensive at the listed price of $30 for a 750ml bottle. Overall I’d rate it a 6/10 and would drink it if it was offered, but this may be my first and last foray with B.B. Small Batch.
Color: Pale Rust
Nose: Sweet corn, a very light note of vanilla.
Taste: Smooth when it first hits your lips, there is not an immediate bite but it does grow slightly on the way down. There is a touch of vanilla to this whiskey, but you have to search for it a little bit.
Finish: Short and mellow. I drank this neat to grasp its full flavor, but would probably be best served over ice.

Kopper Kettle Virginia Whiskey Review

Kopper Kettle Virginia Whiskey ReviewBourbon: Kopper Kettle Virginia Whiskey
Distillery: Distilled, Aged, and Bottled by Belmont Farms of Virginia, Inc., Culpeper, Virginia, USA
Age: 2 Years Old
Proof: 86 Proof (43% ABV)
Notes: I discovered this little gem hidden in the back corner of the liquor store. The secret to Kopper Kettle is that it is made in a genuine 1930’s era copper pot still in the same fashion that fresh corn whiskey was distilled at the time of our ancestors. Just think of the founding fathers getting ripped on Virginia Whiskey and shouting “RULE NUMBER TWO, GUNS FOR EVERYONE!” Kopper Kettle is a triple grain whiskey (corn, wheat, and barley), double wood, and twice distilled. If you are crafty in the ways of creating BBQ sauces, this would be a prime candidate to use, and we at BourbonBlog.com would love to hear your recipe if you were to come up with one!
Color: Pale honey with the tiniest hint of amber.
Nose: Very sweet, the apple wood is strong almost overpowering any other smell you could gain.
Taste: Oak and Apple wood are very prevalent in this whiskey giving it a very sweet taste. There is only the lightest twinge of spice when it first hits your lips.
Finish: Incredibly smooth aftertaste, there is a bit of a tingle that follows at the end, but very pleasant.

Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival, BourbonBlog.com in D.C.

Wild Turkey American Honey Girls“Brew it. Taste it. Sip it. Pork it,” is the motto. Across the country is where it happens. The Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival describes it all! BourbonBlog.com is a friend of this unparalleled festival as they’ve invited us to be part of it several times this year touring across the U.S.A. This weekend, we partied with at blissful festival was in Washington, D.C. Metro area at a beautiful waterfront area called the National Harbor in Maryland.

Around 11,000 people came to this two day festival in two days to eat, drink and experience some new cocktails during BourbonBlog.com‘s “State of the Union” address on whiskey. Does this sound better than listening to a President ramble on and a crowd of representatives applaud on cue? Somehow speaking about whiskey can lead to some rambling on that Democrats, Republicans, Socialists and “Whiskeyocratistcans” all approve of.

We wanted to “Capitolize” on our appearance in our nation’s capitol with a tribute to an old American favorite in Wild Turkey Bourbon and The Copper Fox Distillery, a new American craft distiller based near D.C. Our Capitol Cocktail recipes that I’m including below below will stimulate your taste buds and leave you lobbying for more pours. Don’t start pouring yet, there is more to address…
Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival National Harbor D.C. Greg Nivens, Trigger Agency. BourbonBlog.com.

I arrived in Washington, D.C. in time to hit the Friday night hog roast. I enter to a scene of roasted hogs carried on platters ceremonially paraded through a sea of boozed up festival goers. In the wave party goers, some are beginning to dance around the hog while others are following it to get a fresh taste to compliment to the whiskey and beer. As I pick my warm tasting right off the whole hog, I an into my friend Festival Director Greg Nivens who told me that this roast is exactly how they do in his homeland of North Carolina.

Next, I saw our good friend Rick Wasmund, owner and founder of Copper Fox Distillery just down the road in Sperryville, Virgnia. He poured me a sip Wasmund’s Single Malt Whiskey the Copper Fox Rye Whisky which we use in our new D.C. cocktails.

Craft brewers, local BBQ restaurants, cigar vendors, and the Wild Turkey American Honey Girls as I looked into the sun setting on D.C. and could see the Washington Monument. I’m feeling proud to be an American. We should we have invited a few of our nations so called “enemies” to break bread and Bourbon here and discuss their differences. This kinda flavor could end any war.

Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Hog Roast

Morgan dances as dinner is brought in at the Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ Festival

I made new friends over some Bourbon, including Morgan who we instantly declared a new member of the “BourbonBlog.com Family.” See Morgan’s picture in the Grand Poobah hat? He was a party indeed! He introduced me to his son Rico and daughters Nicole and Ebony and they began spreading the BourbonBlog love.

There is something Bourbon brings people together that after years of hosting and producing BourbonBlog.com, I still can’t describe. Yes, an overindulgence in any alcohol seems to either divide or closely unite. However, with a simple mention of the word “Bourbon” in America, there is a patriotic, conquering and sheer uniting moment that makes my job priceless.

“Is this guy drinking while writing the article?” you may ask. What do you think? But it is still true!

For Saturday, BourbonBlog.com D.C. Correspondent Adam Boyd came to join us for the speech. Additionally, I somehow persuaded one of my friend Steven to leave South Carolina in the early morning hours drive 8 hours to party all day Saturday with us at the Festival.

The two new cocktails I mentioned earlier are the “Stimulus Package” and “The Lobbyist” created by BourbonBlog.com mixologist Stephen Dennison. Several cocktails The Lobbyist is so delicious it can made anyone who serves it the “instant lobbyist” to the recipient you want to influence. The Stimulus Package has a spicy package of pepper that shines through and accentuates the Bourbon. A few unground and whole peppercorns give enough raw robust character to compliment the Russell’s Reserve Bourbon. Russell’s, made by Wild Turkey, differs greatly from Wild Turkey’s original Bourbon as it is a 10 year old Bourbon with some unique, sweet notes.

After our session, we happy to listen to our friend Rob Hutchins, American Whiskey Brand Ambassador for Heaven Hill speak a bit about Bourbon as he shared some Evan Williams Single Barrel with us.

From hot and humid day on the National Harbor, we toasted to our country from the Capitol with piece of our heritage in rye and Bourbon whiskies. Recipes below and check out all the brew, whiskey, Bourbon and spirts  which we sampled in the menus below.
