BourbonBlog.com interviews Kentucky Distillers’ Association (K.D.A) President Eric Gregory live from Frankfort, Kentucky during as he learns that the Kentucky House of Representatives kills The Tasting Bill. The Kentucky Senate passed its own version of the Tasting Bill today. Gregory says that the K.D.A. and Bourbon industry will continue to work toward a solution this week during the special session.

State law and state regulations currently differ with regard to special licenses required to conduct samplings. Distillers themselves are not actually permitted to offer samples beyond their premises. Gregory tells us in this podcast interview that the issue has become more  important than ever to The Kentucky Bourbon Trail as the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and other high profile events will be in Kentucky during the next 12 months.

Climing Mount Everest with Bourbon, sort of

Bacon Bourbon Caramel Corn Pig OutIf I ever climb Mount Everest, be damn assured I’ll bring some Bourbon. A few months ago, climber Bob Peterson of Rockford, Illinois trekked to base camp of the world’s highest mountain and enjoyed some Bourbon too in the form of a snack. He took some Salted Caramel’s sweet & savory snack to sustain him and his fellow hikers. BourbonBlog.com recently reviewed the Bacon Bourbon Caramel Corn on this link. If we review a trip to Mount Everest, I’ll let you know.

“You see lots of granola bars and power bars. Pringles are also popular because of their sturdy packaging. My caramel corn was definitely the most unusual snack on the trek and I knew it would be a treat for the group,” Peterson tells BourbonBlog.com.

Unlike the thousands of people who embark on this journey each year, 56-year-old Peterson did it with it with a medical condition. After having colon surgery, Peterson lives with an ileostomy, which is a surgically created opening in the small intestine for the discharge of body wastes. Peterson learned of another climber, Rob Hill, who is on a Seven Summits Campaign to bring awareness to intestinal disease. “This condition doesn’t have to limit you,” Peterson says. In fact, about half the people in his traveling group of 11 have an ostomy. He says this 60 mile hike, 9000 feet of it uphill was a changing experience.

“I was so disappointed because the photos don’t even begin to capture the beauty,” Peterson explains to BourbonBlog.com. Because he knows we love Bourbon, Peterson snapped a photo of Bacon Bourbon Caramel Corn at base camp. “We ate two of the bags on the way up, but one bag made it all the way to base camp. You can see by the photo that the air pressure expanded in the bag. I thought it was going to explode!”

Bacon Bourbon Caramel Corn is indeed delicious for your next climb to Mount Everest or up the stairs to your man cave. Available online at www.saltedcaramel.net in 8oz bags for $12 or the “Pig Out” 24oz bags for $34.

Early Times Mint Julep Bottle Artist Celeste SusanyFor the past 23 years, the Early Times Mint Julep has proudly served as the “Official Drink of the Kentucky Derby®” with a commemorative artwork bottle released for the past 12 years. Early Times tells BourbonBlog.com that they are now looking for the next artist whose work will grace the 2011 Early Times Mint Julep bottle with the “Early Times Mint Julep Bottle Artist Search” contest.

For 11 of the 12 commemorative bottles, the paintings of the inimitable Celeste Susany have graced the bottle, including the most recent one featured to the left.. 2010 marks her final year with her masterwork entitled “A Golden Moment” featuring the field of contenders galloping along the back stretch while the twin spires stand majestically in the background.

With 2010 marking Susany’s final year of doing the artwork for the commemorative bottle, Early Times is giving consumers the opportunity to submit their own, original artwork for the chance to be featured on the 2011 Kentucky Derby bottle. Consumers can log on to www.earlytimes.com/etmjartistsearch to submit their “What Derby Means to Me” artwork, as well as to see official rules and contest details. The winner will win a VIP trip for two to the 2011 Kentucky Derby, $5,000 in cash, along with having their artwork featured on the 2011 Early Times Mint Julep bottle.

“It has been an honor to have the opportunity to do the artwork for the Early Times Mint Julep bottle for the past 11 years,” Susany tells BourbonBlog.com . “It’s time to give another artist the chance to have their work displayed for horse racing fans to collect and enjoy.”

Elijah Craig Single Barrel 18 year Review

Elijah Craig Single Barrel 18 year old reviewBourbon:  Elijah Craig Single Barrel 18 years Old
Distillery: Heaven Hill Distilleries
Age: 18 years
Proof: 90;  approximately 45% ABV
Notes: An absolute joy of a find! This particular bottle was barreled on December 17, 1981 (Barrel No. 1165), so it had been around since about 1999.
I credit my father for leaving this bottle unattended for me to stumble across.  Aged for 18 years in single charred oak barrel hand chosen by the master distillers, this bourbon has the elegance of a high end bourbon for the exceptional price of around $40-$50 depending on location.  Elijah Craig 18 Year is among a small collection of bourbons that is allowed to age to this maturity and it reflects in it’s taste, color, and richness.   A multiple award winner, this bourbon took home the Gold Medal at the 2004 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.  This bourbon is best drank neat and would be a great compliment to the cigar smoker.
Color: Cloudy, deep amber, a slight orange tinge.
Nose:  Sweet, a mix of nut and caramel.
Taste:  Smokey caramel is what I noticed first on my tongue, when I drew in a breath I tasted a hint of vanilla.  The smoke flavor is very intense from the charred barrel and it is warm all the way down.  The oak and vanilla aftertaste linger on your pallate allowing you to enjoy this sipping bourbon long after your last drink.
Finish:  Bold!  Lingering, tingles slightly but smooths out very nice.

Bourbon reviewed by Adam Boyd, BourbonBlog.com’s D.C. Metro area Bourbon Correspondent.

Blackbeard Revisited

Kilo Kai Spiced RumAs a mixologist, I find myself constantly cross-applying various techniques and applications, attempting to find the absolute right fit for a particular concept. The idea is to use the extracting power of alcohol to pull out the volatile oils found in the skins of whole spices. A form of quick, or tin-infusions. The flavor of the spice can be imparted of a very short period of time- adding depth and complexity with very little effort.

Since most spice-flavors emerge on the finish, this is also a way to add a whole new layer to the cocktail experience. Here, the drink begins sweet, finds it’s spiced rum expression on the palate and then finishes with a flourish of black pepper spice. It might also be noted that some smaller seeds, such as caraway may require the use of a hand-held fine-mesh strainer.

Ingredients:

2 oz Kilo Kai Rum
8 Whole Black Peppercorns
splash High-Proof Rum of choice

Instructions:

Place all into a cobbler shaker (the one with the two-part cap.) Shake well, for 15 seconds. Add ice. Stir until frost forms on the outside of the tin. Strain into a cocktail glass, leaving the peppercorns in the tin. Garnish with an irreverent smile!

The Kung-Fu Punch Recipe

Canton Meets Caribbean

One of the best places to find new and interesting ingredients is in ethnic markets. What people enjoy daily on one part of the planet is unheard of on the other. In America, we are blessed with a growing number of these groceries. I encourage any bartender to explore these places, as they are a source of not only new products, but of new ideas. As with any pre-batched recipes, adjust these proportions to fit your palate and make this your own signature. Additionally, the use of the lemongrass infuses a back note of the ‘herb.’ To accentuate this effect, you may place it in the microwave for 10 seconds to excite the essential oils found in this hearty plant, or simply use more.

Margaritaville Dark Rum
In a pitcher, add:

1 part Margaritaville Spiced Rum
1 part Margaritaville Dark Rum
1 part High-Proof Rum, of Choice
1 part Lychee Puree (see below)
4 parts Pineapple Juice
juice of 2 Limes
1 part Pomegranate Drinking Vinegar
4 dashes Bitters
Splash of Simple Syrup (optional)

Instructions:

Garnish by stirring with lemongrass twig, generously. Ice just before serving, incorporating with lemongrass.

Lychee Puree:

Canned Lychees, packed in simple syrup . Place contents in a blender. Push this through a fine-mesh strainer with a rubber spatula.

85 Lashes Rum by Amalgamated Distilling of St. Louis

85 Lashes Rum Amalgamated Distilling of St. Louis
A
BourbonBlog.com Exclusive by Stephen Dennison

Bourbonblog.com was privy to the very special bottling, tentatively to be released in Missouri and Illinois. Gentleman, you did this thing right, nay, you performed a high-wire act. We’d like to show the world what they are missing.

The difficulty with being a young distillery is establishing a profit-flow. The young craft distillers are employing a great many of techniques to get their product to market. Few have hit the nail on the head like Amalgamated Distilling, else I wouldn’t even bother with these words- or the resulting proofs. This expression of ‘dark rum’ excites the … well, let’s just say I’m very, very happy!

Their key to success is the use of spiral cooperage. Think about it. Normal cooperage is linear. It flows in-line with the natural growth of plant cells contained in the wood. Now, be avante and cut them in half. All of the sudden, the oak bleeds into the spirit at an exponential rate…

This offering hasn’t even come to public, yet when it does, you will know- everyone will be drinking it au naturel. It drinks with the depth and complexity of a dark rum yet finishes so clean, well, as the name suggests, 85 (proof) Lashes…

Pow! How ya’ feeling? Like another?

“85 Lashes gets its unique flavor from our work with a whisky pot-still.” says Jake Jones Amalgamated Distiller. “People who don’t enjoy Rums, love ours. This is truly a Raw Rum, no additives. It’s still warm when we place it into the barrel. We send the used barrels to local restaurants, use them to make porter, or place them in our smoker for meats.”

This care and reflection can be witnessed within the glass. As it should be.
