Laphroaig Sponsorship of 2010 United Stated Curling Association

Laphroaig Laphroaig Islay Single Malt Scotch, that richly flavoured Scotch whisky, tells BourbonBlog.com that they are an official sponsor of the United States Curling Association (USCA) just in time for the 2010 winter games. The sponsorship kicks off a year-long celebration of Scottish heritage by one of the world’s most popular single malt Scotch whiskies.

“We’re excited Laphroaig has been named the official scotch of the United States Curling Association,” Michael Cockram, Senior Director of Laphroaig tells BourbonBlog.com. “We look forward to sharing the rich, flavorful taste and history of our classic whisky with curling fans.”

“There are few brands out there that have as deep a Scottish history as Laphroaig,” said USCA President Leland Rich. “We are honored to have such a respected brand sponsor the United States Curling Association. This truly brings the spirit of the winter games to new heights.”

Starting February, whisky enthusiasts across the country can visit www.Laphroaig.com to register as a Friend of Laphroaig and receive updates regarding the Laphroaig sponsorship and regular product news.

“This sponsorship gives new meaning to the phrase ‘scotch on ice,’” said Scotch Malt Master Simon Brooking. “It is always a pleasure seeing two grand traditions from my homeland, Laphroaig and curling, enjoyed in America.”

Be watching for Laphroaig events celebrating this across the country this year.

Introducing the “Dumantoddy”…

Dumantoddy, photo courtesy Heather Powers, Evansville Living

The Hot Toddy is said to have originated in 18th century Scotland as medicinal elixir to ward off the cold*, but never before has it been given a kick of pistachio along with the Bourbon it was always meant to be paired with.  We just introduced the “Dumantoddy” in the January/February 2010 issue of Evansville Living. The recipe usually calls for tea, whiskey, honey and lemon. The measurements seem to depend upon how sick one is feeling or how much one enjoys their spirits.  Mixologist Stephen Dennison and I created this using Dumante Verdenoce, an Italian made pistachio liqueur that was created by a Louisville entrepreneur Howard Sturm. We selected Elijah Craig 12 Year as the Bourbon whiskey for the Dumantoddy; it expresses the cooperage so well as it allows us to taste the oak barrels it was aged in. In place of honey, Dumante adds sweetness and adds a roundness that you only taste from this type of nut character.

Dumantoddy Recipe

6 oz of water
1 Earl Grey Tea bag (or black tea of your choice)
1/2 oz Dumante Verdenoce
1 oz Elijah Craig 12 year Bourbon whiskey
1 Lemon

Bring water to boil and allow tea to steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Add Dumante and Elijah Craig and then add juice of a quarter lemon. Rub the zest of lemon around the rim of the tea cup to add lemon nose.

*Use your own judgement as the American Lung Association recommends avoiding alcohol when combating a cold.
