Cigar Aficionado Magazine Covers Beer from Louisville In Latest Issue: Bourbon Barrel Stout by BBC a “Highly Recommended Choice”

A bourbon review worth taking note of, though this one is one of our favorite Kentucky bourbon whiskey barrel aged beers!  Bluegrass Brewing Company’s Jefferson’s Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout is reviewed as a “Highly Recommended Choice” as Cigar Aficionado Magazine covers it in their new issue according to Scott Roussell, Managing Partner of BBC.  Not long ago, we visited Louisville in BourbonBlog.com’s  BBC Brewery Episode and learned more about their Bourbon Barrel Stout and beers, video below

BBC’s Bourbon Barrel Stout  was the only barrel aged beer in the group.  The description of the stout is, “Intensely dark color. Nose coffee and licorice. Palate of a maduro cigar, with dark chocolate and coffee. Dry finish with slight honey.”

Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam’s 50 Years in Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey Celebrated With 2009 “Golden Anniversary” Parker’s Heritage Collection

ParkerGA_Bottle_120dpi.3Parker Beam’s 50 years of bourbon making are celebrated in one bottle containing bourbon from each of his five decades of craftsmanship in the new “Golden Anniversary” edition of Parker’s Heritage Collection to be released in September 2009.  However, BourbonBlog.com gives you a sneak peak with a review of this bourbon by Mike Veach on this link. Aged in traditional open-rick warehouses in Nelson County, the Bourbons used to make the Golden Anniversary edition were personally selected and married together by Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam, with the majority of the whiskey aged 10 to 20 years, and much lesser amounts of older whiskey.

To create the rare marriage of whiskeys, barrels from the 1970’s and 80’s were pulled from a variety of 3rd floor locations where temperatures are more variable. Barrels from the 1990’s and 2000’s were pulled from the highest floors in the rickhouse where greater temperature swings promote the aging process. These were combined with a very small amount of Bourbon from the 1960’s to complete the five decade blend.

The 2009 release of Parker’s Heritage Collection comes on the heels of two of Heaven Hill’s most highly acclaimed whiskeys, the barrel-proof 11-year-old 2007 edition Bourbon that was named one of Malt Advocate “Top Ten New Whiskies of 2007″ and placed #21 in F. Paul Pacult’s “111 Best Whiskeys, Brandies, Liqueurs and White Spirits in the World”, and the 27-year-old 2008 Bourbon that won Best of Show, Brown Spirits at the most recent San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was named “North American Whiskey of the Year” by Malt Advocate.

The Golden Anniversary edition will be offered nationally in a 750ml bottle, like the previous two Parker’s Heritage Collection releases, and will be bottled at 100 proof with an average retail price of $150. The entire production run will only number 1500 three bottle cases, which will be allocated across the country and in select international markets.

Parker Beams tells BourbonBlog.com, “I’m honored that Heaven Hill is recognizing my 50 years with this bottling, and I’m also excited that I was able to select and combine Bourbons of such varying ages.”

Heaven Hill says that future editions of Parker’s Heritage Collection will be released annually every Fall, will feature unique expressions of American Whiskey styles drawn from Heaven Hill’s inventory of more than 700,000 aging barrels.

1/2 cup granulated sugar
3-1/2 oz. bittersweet chocolate (70% – 72%), chopped
2 Tbs. Dutch-processed cocoa powder
1/8 tsp. table salt
2 Tbs. good-quality bourbon (like Knob Creek)

Put the sugar, chocolate, cocoa powder, salt, and 2 cups water in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking constantly. Transfer to a 4-cup glass measure (or any container with a spout for easy pouring). Let cool at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Stir in the bourbon and divide the mixture among eight 3-oz. pop molds or wax-lined paper cups. Freeze until just set, about 3 hours. Insert craft sticks and freeze until completely set, about 4 hours more. When ready to serve, unmold or peel off the paper cups.
