Four Roses Mariage Collection 2009 Release Out in September includes 19- and 10-year-old bourbons

Four Roses Mariage Collection 2009 ReleaseFour Roses Distillery will release the second in a series of limited edition, small batch bourbons this September at the 2009 Kentucky Bourbon Festival.

Hall of Fame Master Distiller Jim Rutledge has hand selected and artfully married two bourbon recipes, never before combined, for the exclusive Mariage Collection 2009 Release. It includes a 19-year-old and 10-year-old bourbon from one recipe (coded OBSK), and a 10-year-old bourbon from a different recipe (coded OESO). For more information on Four Roses’ 10 distinct bourbon recipes, visit this link.

Four Roses is the only distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mashbills to produce 10 distinct bourbon recipes, each with its own unique character.

With nearly 43 years in the bourbon industry, Rutledge said he is excited about this year’s selection. “Four Roses has the ability to select two, or more, of our ten unique recipes for this special annual bourbon,” said Rutledge. “It’s not often a bourbon is aged to perfection at 19 years, but this year’s edition is an exception. This is a special occasion and we look forward to sharing it.”

Robust, fruity aromas of ripened cherries and rich pipe tobacco combined with hints of lemon citrus and dried oak help to define this edition in the Mariage Collection. On the palate, suggestions of ripe fruit and allspice emerge with evidence of a smooth caramel and toffee finish.

Bottled at barrel strength and not chill filtered, the distillery will distribute approximately 3,500 bottles of this limited-edition bourbon to markets where Four Roses is currently available.

Last September marked the initial release of the Mariage Collection – which plays off the word “marriage,” and honors the day Four Roses founder Paul Jones Jr. proposed to a beautiful Southern belle.

The Southern belle replied that if her answer were “yes,” she would wear a corsage of four roses to the upcoming ball. When she arrived at the ball, she wore a corsage of four red roses, and Jones later named his bourbon “Four Roses” as a symbol of his passion for her and to honor the special occasion.

25 year-old Rittenhouse Very Rare Single Barrel Rye Review by Mike Veach

25_year_old_Rittenhouse_Very_Rare_Single_Barrel_Rye_whiskeyWhiskey: Rittenhouse Very Rare Single Barrel Rye
Distillery: Heaven Hill
Age: 25 Years Old
Proof: 100
Bottle: Sample sent from the distillery, open for 4 days.
Notes: The sample is actually short of the 25 years since the whiskey was barreled on 11 October 1984 and this was bottled on 7 August 2009.This was bottled un-chill filtered.

Tasted in a Glencairn glass.

Color: Rich Amber Red.

Nose: Fruit with berries and ripe apricot with some floral scents and sweet spices. Just a hint of oak wood and a little caramel. The longer it sits in the glass the more it opens up. Some rich milk chocolate comes after about 30 minutes of letting it breath.

Taste:
Very good mouth feel with a nice oily texture that is almost chewy and very little heat from the alcohol. A wonderful fruitiness of ripe apples and pears with sweet spice (nutmeg) and oak wood. Caramel is not a dominant flavor in this whiskey with only a hint of vanilla or caramel sweetness in the taste.

Finish: A long lasting finish that starts fruity and spice but begins to dry out with oak wood before becoming spice again with a little anise or liquorice.

Notes: This is a very good sipping whiskey. Pour yourself a glass and take your time. It will change every 15 minutes or so and you will be richer for letting it do so.

Heaven Hill Will Release Third And Final Bottling of Rittenhouse, a 25-year-old Very Rare Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey

C25yrback_web.1an the third time possibly be more charming than the first two?  That is the question for American Whiskey enthusiasts as Heaven Hill Distilleries tells BourbonBlog.com that the release of the third and final bottling of Rittenhouse Very Rare Single Barrel Rye will be released this coming winter for the holiday season.  Following the release of the 21-year-old bottling in 2006 and the 23-year-old  in late 2007, the new 25-year-old expression is drawn from the final barrels of the same lot as the first two Rittenhouse Very Rare Single Barrel releases.

“This whiskey, at 25 years old, pushes the limits of barrel aging like the two releases before it,” observed legendary 6th generation distiller Parker Beam. “But like those earlier releases, these barrels have aged on the very first floor of Rickhouse OO.  The more moderate aging conditions on that low level kept the whiskey from getting too woody and tannic.  And by releasing this as a non-chill filtered product—also like the first two—all the flavorful esters and taste components really come through.”

The 21-year-old bottling captured a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was named “Rye Whiskey of the Year” by noted expert Jim Murray in his Whisky Bible 2007.  In November of 2007 the second-edition 23-year-old was released, and it captured the “Best Rye Whiskey” award, and a double gold medal, from the San Francisco Spirits Competition.

With straight rye whiskey enjoying a huge renaissance among both whiskey aficionados and mixologists, the few suppliers that still make and age rye are hard pressed to maintain stocks for their current labels.  Heaven Hill’s Rittenhouse Bottled-in Bond rye is on strict allocation and stocks are extremely limited for the second year in a row.   The first two editions of Rittenhouse Very Rare Single Barrel Rye were quickly depleted from Heaven Hill’s warehouse, and with the continuing resurgence of rye there is every reason to believe the third and final edition will sell out just as quickly.”

Rittenhouse Very Rare 25-year-old Single Barrel Rye, which will be available in major metro markets throughout the country for the holiday season at an average retail price of $190 for a 750ml bottle, is a very limited release—only one thousand 3-bottle cases, or a total of 3,000 bottles, will be shipped within the US, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The 100 proof  whiskey is very rare for a number of reasons—its single barrel designation, its remarkable age, its pedigree as a Heaven Hill straight rye, its lack of chill filtering.  When all combined into one outstanding, impressively dressed package, it will represent a new “holy grail” for American Whiskey and Rye Whiskey lovers.

Heaven Hill Distilleries, the country’s second largest producer of Bourbon, tells BourbonBlog.com that they take great pride in the fact that they are the only one of the nation’s major distillers who make all the recognized styles of American straight whiskey—Bourbon, rye whiskey, corn whiskey, even their Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey.  Rye, which was the first straight whiskey produced in the thirteen colonies and was until the late 20th century the preeminent style of American Straight Whiskey, is prized among whiskey lovers for its sharp, fruity taste and spicy finish.  Heaven Hill was one of three distilleries that kept the rye category alive during the 1970’s and 1980’s, despite stagnant or declining sales.

In Fig-titious Fashion created by The Intoxicologist

figThe flavor is of dried fruit with the spirits distinguishing themselves in layers gradually.  In Fig-titious Fashion was inspired by the Muddled Old Fashion, although this cocktail has been a work in progress for some time.  The figs were made on a whim as part of a creative experiment.  St Remy XO happened by sheer luck after sampling the most delicious Brandy Sidecar cocktail at Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse locally the other evening.  With the dark dried fruit and nut flavor of the brandy and the Old Fashioned cocktail still muddling through my brain, the Jim Beam Bourbon infused figs seemed a natural progression.  The juice of the orange plays freshly while fig and dark fruit rolls over the back of the tongue.  Bourbon begins this nice slow dance across the palate in almost a devious sort of way that is unnoticeable at first and then it begins in full.  Even the nut of the St Remy begins to shine.  Since this isn’t quite an Old Fashioned, but based upon the formula it’s rather fictitious, don’t you think?

In Fig-titious Fashion– created by The Intoxicologist
2-1/2 ounces Jim Beam Bourbon
1/2 ounce St Remy Brandy XO
1/4 ounce Jim Beam Infused Fig Syrup
4 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
1/2 slice fresh Orange
1 Maraschino Cherry
2 Jim Beam Infused Figs
Garnish: 1 each – Orange Slice, Jim Beam Infused Fig, Maraschino Cherry

Muddle orange slice, maraschino cherry, two Jim Beam Infused figs and bitters in the bottom of a mixing glass.  Add Jim Beam Bourbon, St Remy XO and Jim Beam infused fig syrup.  Add ice and shake well.  Strain into an Old Fashioned glass filled half full of ice.  Garnish with skewered orange slice, fig and maraschino cherry.

Jim Beam Infused Figs
1 package dried figs
1 cup Jim Beam Bourbon

Place figs in a glass container.  Pour Jim Beam Bourbon over figs.  Make sure the figs are completely covered.  Add more Jim Beam if desired, since the figs will soak up some of the bourbon.  Seal with lid and refrigerate.  All the figs to soak up the bourbon for a few days before using.  The bourbon will become syrupy and rich with fig and bourbon flavor.

Hayden’s ‘Cheri’ Smash created by The Intoxicologist

smashBasil Hayden’s Bourbon creates the ideal base for infusing cherries.  The process is simple.  Place 25 to 30 dried cherries into a glass container.  Pour approximately 5 ounces Basil Hayden’s Bourbon over the dried cherries.  Seal container.  Place in the refrigerator for at least 5 to 7 days before first use to allow the cherries to soak up as much bourbon as possible.

This renders a gorgeous cocktail that plays on the cherry tones of the Basil Hayden’s Bourbon while instilling a bit of fresh cherry flavor.  Cinnamon notes become subtly evident where they are scarcely noticeable when Basil Hayden’s Bourbon is sipped neat.

Hayden’s ‘Cheri’ Smash– created by The Intoxicologist
6 Fresh Cherries – pitted
1/2 ounce Basil Hayden’s Infused Cherry Syrup
3 ounces Basil Hayden’s Bourbon
1/2 teaspoon Bar Syrup
Squeeze of Lemon Peel over the top
3 Basil Hayden’s Infused Cherries Garnish

Muddle the cherries, bar syrup and infused cherry syrup in a cocktail shaker.  Pour in Basil Hayden’s.  Add ice.  Shake.  Strain over ice into a large rocks glass filled half with ice.  Zest a lemon peel over the drink and give it a gentle squeeze to get the essential oils out.  Garnish with skewer of Basil Hayden’s infused cherries
